We have a saying around here: The glow-up is internal. And, according to Jungian psychology, so is the ancient science of alchemy.
The roots of alchemy are found across many cultures spanning thousands of years. Alchemists were the prequel to our modern-day scientists. Their Magnum Opus, or Great Work, was the creation of the Philosopher’s Stone, a fabled substance also known as the Elixir of Life. And though we may never know if they ever actually achieved this goal, alchemists believed that the Philosopher’s Stone possessed several magical properties, including the power to turn base metals into gold, heal every kind of illness, and grant its bearer immortality.
For centuries people laboured in vain to try and create the Philosopher’s Stone to serve their own selfish desires. Alchemists were notoriously cryptic in their writings for this very reason. They preferred to communicate in code, symbols, and images that only revealed their true wisdom to those with the ability to decipher them, lest such immense power should fall into the wrong hands and be used for destructive purposes.
Then Dr. Carl Jung entered the chat. He theorized that genuine alchemists obscured their real power behind the symbol of the Philosopher’s Stone: The power of the alchemist to affect the outcome of things in their world for the better by becoming a balanced and enlightened human being. Thus, alchemy was reimagined as the art of turning inner lead into gold, a transmutation not of metals but of the human soul.
Jungian alchemy calls us to see life not as a sequence of events but as a transformative journey – a Great Work that challenges us to confront our deepest shadow, release what no longer serves us, and rise with a clearer vision of our inner essence. It urges us to leave behind the smallness of everyday concerns and step into the crucible of our becoming, where suffering turns to wisdom and fragmentation transforms into wholeness.
In other words, the alchemist is the Philosopher’s Stone.
The alchemical path is not for the faint-hearted. It requires us to embrace paradox, sit with uncertainty, and bring the hidden depths of our psyche into the light of awareness through intense shadow work.
If you decide this path is for you, we created this necklace to aid you on your sacred journey. Engraved upon it are two of the most important emblems of alchemy found in ancient manuscripts: The symbol for the Philosopher’s Stone encircled by an Ouroboros. These two symbols combined express the main tenets of alchemy: The interconnectedness of the Universe, the hidden wisdom of the unconscious, inner purification, transmutation, death, rebirth, and spiritual awakening.
